About writing numbers in words

Spelling numbers out is standard practice on cheques, in legal contracts and across formal writing, because words leave no room for a misread or altered figure. This tool groups your digits into threes and names each group with its scale — thousand, million, billion, trillion and beyond — so even very large numbers read correctly.

In plain mode the digits after the decimal point are read one by one, so 3.14 becomes "three point one four". Turn on currency phrasing and the same number is read as an amount — the whole part becomes the main unit (dollars, euros, pounds, rupees or yen) and the first two decimals become the minor unit (cents, pence or paise).

It is handy for filling in cheques, drafting invoices, double-checking a contract figure, or helping a child learn how big numbers are spoken.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big a number can I convert?
You can convert numbers up into the trillions, including decimals. Commas in your input are fine and a leading minus sign for negative numbers is handled too.
How are decimals read out?
By default the decimal part is read digit by digit, for example "point five nine". Turn on currency phrasing to read the decimals as cents instead, like "and fifty cents".
Can it write amounts for cheques and invoices?
Yes. With currency phrasing on you can pick dollars, euros, pounds, rupees or yen, which gives you the exact wording used on cheques and contracts.
Can I change the capitalisation?
Yes. You can output the words in lower case, Sentence case, Title Case or UPPER CASE to match wherever you're pasting them.
Does it use British or American English?
It uses the short-scale naming common to both British and American English — for example, one thousand million is written as a billion.
Is my number sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Nothing you type is ever uploaded, and we never see it.
